Setting Up Clients For Online Backups

Overview

This document details step by step instructions on setting up a backup client for online backups.

Setting Up Clients for Online Backups

Please refer Windows Follow the below instructions to setup the client for backing up to the online backup server:

Install in your customer's client PCs using the Client-Only installation.

Install the Client build in the client machine. Make sure you assign a unique ID for the Client installation. By default will take the machine name (in which it is installed) as its ID. But we recommend that you use a globally unique name, such as email-id or a domain suffix, for all your installations.

If the installation is not associated with any user (e.g. a server at your customer’s office), then using a DNS name (e.g. client1.datamaniacs.com) will make it globally unique.

If the client is associated with a particular user then using the users email ID (e.g. pete@datamaniacs.com) will make the ID globally unique.

Having globally unique client names will make it easier for you to manage your customers/clients.

Add Server to Peer List

Once is installed in the client machine, go the "Settings->Add Peer / Delete Peer " page in the client web console and add the public lookup name (or public IP address) of the backup server to which the client should connect for backup.

Connecting to the backup server

If Auto Authorization is enabled for the Default Reseller and for the Default Customer in the backup server, then the client can connect to the backup server and start backing up. If, however, Auto Authorization is disabled (it is disabled by default) in the backup server, then the following needs to be done before the client can connect to the backup server:

  1. You should first add the client in your backup server under the respective Reseller/Customer account with the same ID, (say pete@vembu.com) and assign a password to it while adding the client.

  2. Make sure the Client is installed in the client machine with the same ID (pete@vembu.com).

  3. The client should then be authenticated with the backup server by doing the following:

    1. Go to the "Settings-> Authenticate Client" page in the client web console.

    2. Select the server.

    3. Enter the password that was specified when adding the client (pete@vembu.com) in the backup server.

    4. Click on the "Authenticate" button to authenticate this trial client with the server.

    5. Once authenticated, the client can start running backups to the server. Note that the manual authentication step needs to be done only once. Subsequent authentication (when the client backs up to the server) is done automatically.
