Client Registration

Overview

client machines backing up to a backup server are organized under appropriate Reseller (if Reseller Management is enabled) and Customer accounts in the backup server. When a new client machine backs up to a backup server, it is by default added under the Default Customer.

The Default Customer account by default is set to 'Enable Auto Authorization' which allows client new machines to be added under it without having the client machines to first authenticate with the backup server. The other Customer accounts that are added in the backup server by you are by default set to 'Disable Auto Authorization', for security purposes. For a Client machine to be added under such a Customer, you need to first create the Client account in the backup server. For security purposes, you could create the client with a password and the Client machine has to then authenticate with the backup server using that password before it can start backing up under that Customer.

Creating a Client account under the appropriate Customer account in the backup server for each of the client machines and then assigning a password and authenticating them with it may be cumbersome when the number of client machines is large. The Client Registration feature provides an easier but a secure way to authenticate and add new client machine under the appropriate Reseller/Customer accounts.

How to get here in the Web Console?
In the Client web console: In the Client web console login page, click on the "Sign Up" link below the user name/password fields.

In the Backup Server web console: Go to "Server Admin->Reseller/Customer Management->Add Customer" and enter the details of the Customer account to be created. When you save the information, the backup server will prompt you if you want to send the Customer account details to the Customer. Choose the option to send the email. The backup server will send the Passkey to the Customer with which the client machines can be registered under that Customer.

Client Registration

The illustration above shows the sequence of steps required by the admin on the backup server and the Customer on the client side to register a client under a Customer in the backup server.

  1. Create the Customer account in the backup server by going to the 'Add Customer' page under Customer Management page in the backup server web console. The Customer Management page can be accessed through Server Admin > Reseller Management > Click on the Reseller' (if Reseller Management is enabled in the backup server) or through Server Admin > Customer Management (if Reseller Management is disabled). After entering the details of the Customer account, click on the Save button. The backup server will prompt you if you want to send an Email to the Customer with the account details. Choose OK.

  2. backup server creates the Customer account and sends an Email to the Customer with the details of the account, including the unique Customer Passkey.

  3. The Customer will receive the Email with the Passkey. Customer can then access the web console of the client machine that needs to be registered. In the login page in the client web console, the Customer should click on the link Sign Up which takes the Customer to the Client Registration page where a client Password can be chosen and the Passkey is entered. The ID of the client (user name) and the chosen client password can be used for the following:

    • To log into the client web console with full access
    • To log into the backup server (from anywhere) to access the backups of that client machine.

Note: This is possible only if web access is enabled for the client in the backup server.

  4. On receiving the registration request from the client machine, the backup server adds the Client under that particular Customer.

Troubleshooting

Error occurred while trying to register the client Show/Hide

Cause: Some internal error occurred, either at client or backup server side, when registering this client.

Solution: Check the events for any error message.

The server you are trying to register this client is not a backup server Show/Hide

Cause: is not running in backup server mode in the selected backup server system.

Solution: Check whether is running in backup server. Also make sure the server that you have specified is the client is a backup server.

The Passkey key specified does not seem to be valid one. Show/Hide

Cause: The entered Customer passkey is not valid.

Solution: Check if the entered Customer passkey is correct by checking it against the passkey in the backup server in the "Server Admin -> Reseller Management -> Reseller [Reseller Name] -> Edit Customer action" page in the backup server's web console page.

Client's group is currently deactivated Show/Hide

Cause: In the backup server, the Reseller/Customer is deactivated.

Solution: Check whether the Reseller/Customer account under which the client is been registered is deactivated. If the Reseller/Customer is deactivated, then activate the Reseller/Customer and check it again.

Client limit reached for the group corresponding to the specified Passkey. Show/Hide

Cause: The Customer under which you are trying to register the client in the backup server has exceeded the maximum clients limit.

Solution: Check the Customer's client limit value in "Server Admin -> Reseller Management -> Reseller [Reseller Name] -> Edit Customer action" page. If the number of clients registered under this Customer has reached this limit, increase the maximum clients limit value for that Customer in the backup server.

No valid backup location was found to be set for the group corresponding to the specified Passkey. Show/Hide

Cause: The Customer's backup storage location is not accessible to the backup server.

Solution: Check if the Customer's backup storage location is accessible to the backup server and has enough permission to access that location.

Not enough backup space available to add this client. Show/Hide

Cause: There is no sufficient backup space available in the backup server or allotted to the Reseller/Customer to accommodate this client.

Solution: Increase the allotted backup space for the backup server/Reseller/Customer.
