- Install StoreGrid in your backup server in Server or Client-Server mode
The first step is to assign a StoreGrid ID for the StoreGrid Server installation. By default StoreGrid will take the machine name in which it is installed as its StoreGrid ID. But we recommend that you use a globally unique ID for all your StoreGrid installations. Since a StoreGrid server is not associated with any user, using a DNS name (eg. server1.example.com) will make it globally unique.
StoreGrid Server ID's need to be unique only if multiple servers (installed in the client-server configuration) at a Service Provider need to have backups for themselves (backups for the backups). Even if this does not apply to you, unique names will help you manage your customers/clients better as your business grows.
- Apply License Key to Server
Apply the license key provided for your server. You can do this from the "Server Admin -> License Management -> Apply License Key To Server" page.
- Trial customer Setup
By default the StoreGrid server creates a Trial Customer under which any StoreGrid client can automatically backup as a trial user. This feature is called Auto Authorization. If you want to allow only authorized users to backup as ‘trial users’, then you need to do the following:
Go to the "Server Admin->Customer Management" page.
In the "Trial Customer" row, click on the icon under "Allow/Deny Auto Authorization" and change it to deny Auto Authorization.
If you ‘deny Auto Authorization’ for trial users, you will need to manually add your ‘trial client’ under the Trial Customer for trial users to backup to the server. The procedure for this is outlined in steps d,e,f below.
You can add new clients by clicking the icon under "Add New Client".
The "Client Name" field in the "Add New Client" page has to contain the StoreGrid ID the trial user is going to use. The user (client PC) needs to have installed StoreGrid under the name of the same StoreGrid ID.
The "Password" field in the "Add New Client" page is mandatory. You should give this password to the trial user. The trial user should authorize his/her StoreGrid client with the server with this password before configuring a backup. The user can change his/her password anytime from the StoreGrid client's UI. Note that user needs to manually authorize his/her client only once. StoreGrid client will store this password and use it to automatically authorize itself whenever it connects to the server.
- Adding a new customer
You can add a new customer whenever you have acquired a customer for your online backup service. Let us say you have a customer called ABC Inc., who has 5 clients to be backed up. To add this customer ABC Inc., to your server, you need to do the following:
Go to the "Server Admin->Customer Management" page.
Click on the "Add New Customer" Icon on the left.
Set the disk space for this customer.
-
If you want the clients in this customer site to backup without your adding the client names (StoreGrid IDs) manually in the server, then keep Auto Authorization enabled for this customer. Note that if you disable Auto Authorization, then you need to add clients (with their StoreGrid IDs) manually under this customer. By keeping the Auto Authorization enabled, you are basically avoiding this manual step. The Clients will be automatically created in the server when the clients backup to this server for the first time.
You can limit the number of MSPEUs allotted for the customer ABC Inc., from the MSPEUs available for the Server (OR) you can choose to automatically allocate MSPEUs for the customer on the fly as and when needed.
-
If you want to disable Auto Authorization for Customer ABC Inc., then you need to manually create each client (with the StoreGrid ID) in the server before the clients can backup to the server.
You can allot maximum disk space for each client under the customer by drilling down to a client from the Customer Management page.
